Job Summary
As a Data Center Technician, you are the frontline guardian of our physical infrastructure. Working in tandem with our SRE (Hybrid Infrastructure) team, you will ensure the continuous availability and health of our on-premises footprint. You are responsible for the "Ground-to-Rack" lifecycle, managing everything from power and cooling oversight to the intricate cabling of our Unix, Linux, and Enterprise Storage systems. The Mission: Physical Reliability
Your mission is to maintain a "Zero-Failure" physical environment. While our SREs manage the logical systems, you ensure that the physical hardware is installed, cabled, and maintained to the highest industry standards. Your first 6 months will focus on Infrastructure Auditing and Standardization, ensuring our Bethpage facility is a blueprint for physical reliability.
Responsibilities
- Hardware Lifecycle Management: Lead the physical installation (Rack & Stack), decommissioning, and hardware replacement for x86 servers, Unix nodes, and SAN/NAS storage arrays.
- Cabling Excellence: Maintain high-density Fiber Channel, Ethernet, and InfiniBand cabling. Ensure all connections are labeled, routed, and documented according to our global standards.
- Inventory & Asset Tracking: Manage the physical asset database (DCIM). Ensure every serial number, RU (Rack Unit), and cable path is accurately recorded to prevent "orphan" hardware.
- Power & Cooling Oversight: Monitor rack-level power consumption and thermal thresholds. Partner with facilities teams to ensure redundant power (UPS/PDU) and HVAC systems are functioning within spec.
- Vendor & Logistics Coordination: Act as the on-site point of contact for hardware vendors (Dell, HPE, NetApp). Manage the shipping, receiving, and secure disposal (e-waste) of critical infrastructure components.
- Smart Hands Support: Provide remote-hands assistance for the SRE team, including console-level troubleshooting, physical disk swaps, and component-level upgrades (RAM, NICs, SFPs).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
- 0-2years of experience in mobile network operations or systems engineering roles.
- DC Operations: 3+ years of experience in a mission-critical data center environment.
- Physical Layer Mastery: Expert knowledge of copper (Cat6) and fiber optic (Single-mode/Multi-mode) cabling standards and testing procedures.
- Hardware Proficiency: Hands-on experience with enterprise-grade server hardware and storage chassis. Ability to diagnose physical component failures (LED codes, POST errors).
- Tooling: Familiarity with DCIM tools (e.g., NetBox, Sunbird) and ticketing systems (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow).
- Safety & Compliance: Understanding of OSHA data center safety standards and physical security protocols (SOC2/PCI-DSS compliance).
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet in a temperature-controlled data center environment.
